A redesign of the TripAdvisor app aimed at simplifying travel planning and booking. Through research, user journeys, and design exploration, the project reimagines the platform with a cleaner interface, smoother flows, and a more modern travel experience.

Through research, personas, and design sprints, we reframed the app around clarity and flow. The redesign prioritized effortless booking, personalized recommendations, and smoother navigation. Each feature was crafted to reduce friction, highlight what matters, and support users from discovery to trip completion.

Problem & Insight

Methods: in-depth reviews & secondary research

  • Research revealed gaps in trip preparation and itinerary planning.

  • Traveler overwhelmed with too many steps (avg. 12 screens to complete a booking).

  • Alerts: Wishlists not translating into actual bookings.

  • Book Flows: Confusing navigation created drop-offs.

  • Destination: Personalisation lacked depth.

  • End of Trip: Algorithm maps and reviews under-used.

Journey Map

Mapping real traveler journeys revealed key decision points and drop-offs. This highlighted opportunities to improve discoverability, booking speed, and confidence in choices. The redesigned flow reorganized content, improved hierarchy, and created a smoother path from inspiration to booking.

Core Principles

Simplicity by design

  • User-centered journeys — flows tailored to each traveler’s goals.

  • Guided interaction — onboarding and contextual nudges.

  • Focused information — essentials up front, details secondary.

  • Calm aesthetics — decluttered layouts with high readability.

Outcomes

User testing showed the redesigned app felt faster, clearer, and more intuitive. Travelers completed bookings with fewer steps, found navigation easier to follow, and felt more confident planning their trips. Overall, the new flow delivered a simpler, less overwhelming travel experience.
